Tesla is having trouble with more than just electric vehicles. The company’s Powerwall, a home battery storage system that works great with a solar roof, has just received a new competitor from Anker.
Anker’s new battery system, the Anker Solix complete energy storage solution (part of the overall Solix product line), in modular form, will bring a twist to this category. Anker says his system will scale from 5kWh to 180kWh. This should give consumers flexibility not only in energy storage, but also in price. Flexibility can be an important advantage for those looking for an energy storage solution that is better suited for emergency backup.
Instead, Tesla’s Powerwall comes standard with 13.5 kWh, but it can be combined with up to 10 other devices. However, as you understand, such a system is not cheap. The cost of just one Powerwall is approximately $11,500. On top of that, you must order a power supply with Tesla solar panels.
Anker’s system will reportedly be compatible with users’ existing solar panels, but it also sells its own options in that regard.
Speaking of solar panels, in addition to the powerful mobile power station, Anker also launched its own balcony solar panel and mobile power grid.
The Anker Solix Solix Solarbank E1600 includes two solar panels and an inverter that plugs into an electrical outlet to send power back to the grid. Anker says the system will be available first in Europe and is compatible with “99%” of balcony-mounted photovoltaic products.
The system has a power of 1.6 kWh, is IP65 water and dust resistant, and Anker says it only takes five minutes to install. The solar array supports 6,000 charge cycles and also comes with an app that connects to the device via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Both products are important to a company like Anker, which has made a name for itself selling powerful power supplies and charging accessories. But the main factor that will determine whether Anker has a chance to capture Tesla’s target market is price. In this regard, it is not clear what Anker’s decision will be.
For example, if its lowest storage option costs less than Tesla’s base 13.5kWh Powerwall, that might make sense for consumers who don’t need the extra power.
Anker says it will provide more details later this year and plans to release Solix products by 2024.
